Final victory at the Palacio after a big rival comeback
14-10-2021
The Whites had a great first period against the French team: with 4 minutes played the locals had already a 10 point margin (11-1) thanks mostly to the Hanga - Yabusele duo. Causeur helped scoring while Heurtel was in control of the game’s pace. The score at the end of the first ten minutes was cause for concern for the visitors as Real dominated 30-12.
Laso’s men were back on track at the start of the second period and they managed to lead by 24 points by mid quarter (46-22, min. 26). But Monaco woke up and responded thanks mostly to a superb Mike James. The French signed a 2-13 run reaching halftime ‘only’ 12 points behind Real (51-39, min.20).
James’ recital kept going in the third period while the visitor’s center Hall joined the guard who scored a three by the buzzer and closed the quarter with only a 7 point deficit for his team: 72-65, min. 30.
Real was to knock first entering the last 10 minutes of the game: thanks to Tavares and Taylor the Whites got back to double digit advantages. But on Monaco's side many players had switched on (Thomas, Motejiunas, Andjusic, Westermann) and Real had more difficulties scoring than during the first three periods.
5 consecutive points scored by Will Thomas gave Monaco its first and single game advantage (81-83, min. 37), but Yabusele was about to make his appearance again with 5 consecutive points as well (3 free throws and a basket, 86-83), and Rudy scored from downtown entering the last minute of the game.
Monaco had no response to Real’s reaction and Heurtel closed the game for the Whites with two last baskets, sealing a locals' 94-86 win.
