Scariolo's men showed again great team work on their Olympics debut and early in the game were already leading 2-11 forcing the hosts to call their first time out. The locals' pause proved to be efficient and the Japanese team was more accurate offensively and managed to reduce the difference in the scoreboard (14-18, min 10).

After an inspired beginning by the hosts in the second period, mostly by Hachimura's actions, It was the time for Spain's best minutes of the game: a 0-19 run, thanks again to a collective game, was leading the Spanish squad to a comfortable 20 point advantage (28-48) by halftime.

Coming off the locker room a slower game presented the Japanese team making great efforts on both paints, but Scariolo's men still in command. By the end of the third quarter the Spanish team's rotations had seen all 12 players on court at some point, including newcomer López-Arostegui. The quarter run was for Japan but Spain was 13 points ahead, 56-69, before entering the final period.

Both teams exchanged baskets during the last quarter, that Scariolo used for all players keeping up and getting in pace for Thursday's game against Argentina. Good debut from Spain who beat a combative Japanese squad by 77-88.
